Each week at the farmers' market in Chestertown, our customers hungrily, ask, "Do you have lettuce?" Happily, our answer is generally yes. In order to ensure a continued supply of our mesclun mix, we must practice succession planting:In agriculture, succession planting refers to several planting methods that increase crop availability during a growing season by making efficient use of space and timing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Succession_planting
For us this has meant seeding new rounds of lettuce every two or three weeks, a strategy that is known as same crop succession planting. This has allowed for the continued harvesting of our lettuce mix.
